Some new changes coming to this space soon. Shortly, i will be migrating to a new website, name and all. very exciting. I will still be generally pleased, but even more so. If that is possible.
For now, here are some new pics to be excited by from a new project with Onset Arts. A fine bunch of men constructing sets for a variety of big name theatre companies around Melbourne.

A few new videos to watch and be excited by!

The first was one done for Nicole Edwards, a young Melbourne actress. She did a smashing job. also the first on the new camera!

The second was completed for Sophie Walsh Harrington, a Melbourne based cabaret artist. She’s off to the Edinburgh Festival with her show A Damsel in Shining Armour, so crossing fingers and toes for a good show for her.

Shorts shorts and shorts. Add in some more shorts and its a healthy year thus far.

Plus a ridiculously large corporate gig that seems destined not to end, the resuts of which I am both happy with, as are the clients. Aside from this video, at the moment, there are about 11 others. It will end, it will end, it will end!

There is other stuff in the works, so here’s to a fruitful year and who knows, this could be the year that i finally get my hands on one of these. If you have to ask, don’t. You’ll spend most of the day asking why.

Plus plus plus

Finally, I jumped and scored vimeo’s plus package. Not an arm and a leg, but proscratination finally
Got the better of me.

What does it mean? Well, at it’s most basic, all my videos are now available on mobile. I know that YouTube vida have been likethis for longer, but you know what, YouTube is not my thing. I have always been a big fan of vimeo. Quality has always been top notch and the vibe is better. One day I may post a video of a cat doing something funny, but for the most part, I’ll stick with creating little short films that rock my socks.

Howdy

Been a while hasn’t it? But it’s been a good busy for busyj.

Right now, it’s front row for some tunes by tanya taguak. I think that’s how you spell it. In any case, it’s an instense hour coming up. Crazy beautiful throat singer from Canada. Haunting. Yup, haunting.

All this from womadelaide 2011. It’s become a source of inspiration for new tunes. Which for me means new music for films. Love working them side by side.

Tropfest and Remixing

Well, it came and went for 2011 and already the internets are rife with speculation regarding the originality of the winning video. I would take it further and say that a few of them were rip-offs, or elongated retakes. However, originality IS difficult in these times. With Youtube and other video sharing sites on the internet, it is a challenge to see something truly original. And hell, if Hollywood can’t get it right, pumping out remixes, copies and 3D trite, how can we expect John Polson’s Tropfest to do the same.

So here I present three of the Tropfest films for 2011, and a versus video, all of which I have seen previous to this post. The films compared are A DESPERATE DEED, THE UNSPOKEN and ANIMAL BEATBOX.

A DESPERATE DEED
When I first watched this one, I loved it because it scared the bejesus out of me. It’s short sharp and too the point. And it was clever to boot.

THE UNSPOKEN
Unspoken, for my money, should have been the winner. It’s a great style of well composed shots mixed with a beautiful narrative. What was more thrilling was that it was real. The following video is an example of this.

ANIMAL BEATBOX
And lastly, the winner, Animal Beatbox. It was catchy, and for all of 30 seconds I was amused. But after that, boredom set in and I let out a small titter for the remainder. I suppose that’s why Eustus Comedy kept his at 45 seconds. In and out like a good internet video.

For the record, I made my own film for Tropfest and it got into the Top 50. I was pretty chuffed that my $70 film got that far and am thankful that it did. I am not and never will be jealous or spiteful towards the other film makers or Tropfest. The majority of films I saw were great. With a handful of trite thrown in. But that’s Torpfest hey. Doesn’t show the best, but it entertains for a few hours.

To kick off the year.

It’s been a busy few weeks preparing entries for TROPFEST and the optus180 TV Pilot festivals.

I shot two films for TROPFEST at the end of last year and blow me down, stone the crows and whatever else, one of them got shortlisted!

That’s it for now, nothing more to say!

Welcome to 2011. after a mixed bag of 2010, here’s looking forward to some unique and interesting projects ahead.

Firsly, I await with baited breathe for the announcement of this year’s Tropfest Finalists. i got 2 films in this year and look forward to at least a phone call for one of them!

As for technical resolutions :

1. RED better release their Epic-S. Full frame, 4k goodness. And with it…

2. Full Metal Consequence. My next major 25 minute long project. If I get my hands on the Epic-S, its fullsteam ahead on a two year old script.

3. More shorts for actors

4. More theatrical Filming

5. Getting my audio right!

So full steam, let’s see where all this goes!

Year’s End

Well, time to wrap some things up, but not presents. Just Philums. A few things to finish on post for two films for Tropfest so fingers crossed there.

After a few weeks of work, discs were sent off to the peeps looking after Woman in Berlin, a stunning one woman show with Meredith Penman and directed by Janice Muller. Here is the result in its simplest form at a hard to cut down two minutes.
